Alcoholism: Knowing When You Need Help

by Salvador Paez

You wouldn’t know you’re already alcoholic until you have to be sent to a rehabilitation center, and this is because you you are enjoying too much drinking. But enjoyment, no matter how it makes you happy, can always be dangerous. Here are some signs to know when you’re already in a risky situation.

When you don’t even need friends, and you don’t need an environment with many people drinking, but still choose to drink, and alone at that - you may be an alcoholic. Drinking alone is no laughing matter. It shows how much you want to drink so badly.

If you’re young and you’re not allowed to drink yet you still drink, that may be a sign of alcoholism. For example, you always skip going to school and you go to some place to drink with anybody or alone. This means that rules don’t matter to you anymore, just having your fix of alcohol.

Alcoholics will do anything to justify their bad drinking habits. If you make up illogical reasons why you believe you function better with alcohol in your system, then you’re definitely an alcoholic. You might even believe than beer is like a vitamin supplement for you. You such beliefs are ridiculous, yet you still hold on to them because they justify your addiction.

When you feel the need to drink because time or work would not allow you to, but still choose to drink secretly - you may be an alcoholic.

It’s hard for people not to notice the changes in you when you start to develop alcoholism. People who care about you will soon come up to you and talk to you about it. If you get mad at them because of it, then that’s another sign that you’re already an alcoholic. Basically, it suggests that you’re putting alcohol over people who care much about you.

If your alcoholism is not countered early, pretty soon, you’ll start losing your appetite for food. You’ll notice that your favorite foods don’t taste as good as before. And you absolutely won’t eat foods that you didn’t find special before. In fact, you’d rather have alcohol three or more times a day.

Alcoholism will not only alter your behavior, it will also modify your physical self. First, you will start skipping bath times and then you don’t take them at all. Your hygiene becomes very poor, and people start getting disgusted of you because of it.

Finally, your own health will be compromised. Without alcohol intake, you shiver and shake. You feel like you’ll go crazy or like you’ll die. And the truth is, you can die of alcoholism if you don’t counter it, either through physical degeneration or you’ll do something unnecessary and put yourself in mortal danger.

You may deny it like every alcoholic does, but acceptance alone is already a sacrifice that is worth a better life.

Wine Gift - A Gift That Keeps Giving

by John Wineberger

If you have been looking for a gift that suits nearly all occasions, then why not consider a nice bottle of wine? For anyone that has passed the legal alcohol age limit, receiving a bottle of wine on a special occasion or day is always well received. A wine gift is a classic custom that has been performed for quite a long time and is re-finding its popularity today. A fine bottle of wine is always right and will never sit on a shelf gathering dust.

Wine Gift Baskets

When receiving wine as a gift, it will usually be presented as a gift basket. The main items that will makeup the basket will usually depend on the taste of the person receiving the gift, your budget and the price. A normal wine gift basket will contain two bottles of wine and nice appetizers to accompany which ever type of wine that you have chosen. It is very important that you match the right appetizers to the right wine so that your present can truly be enjoyed. Chocolates are a perfect match for red wines. Crackers and various kinds of spreads go very well with chardonnay and cheese like Brie are normally paired to sweet wines. If you would like to make your own gift basket, just head down to your local gift store and find someone that will help you.

Best Wine Of the Month

If you want to get creative and give a gift that keeps giving, then why not try a membership in a wine of the month club? This is a wonderful gift, especially for a wine lover. Every month, the recipient will receive a different type of wine that has been pre-selected by you. Wine gifts like these will usually set you back around $100.00 to $300.00 depending on your wine selection. You will have the option to select white or red wines or a combination of both. If the person receiving the wine finds something to their taste, they will also have the opportunity to re-order the same wine as many times as they like through the club.

An Assortment Of Wine Gifts

If one bottle of wine is not going to impress, then why not give two bottles and if that also makes you feel uneasy, why not give an entire case? However, remember that wine is always well received and is a gift that can easily stand on its own.

Choosing The Wine

Giving a vintage wine as a git could be more appropriate for a lover of fine wines or even a connoisseur. However it would be very wise for you to taste the wine beforehand to make sure that you are really getting what you are actually paying for.

Vintage wines are nearly always presented in their own wooden wine gift box and if you are lucky enough, it will also be paired with a little booklet giving you some facts about the origins and a brief history of the wine. If this is not the case, you can always search for the wine on the Internet and hopefully come up with a little bit of background that you will be able to share with the person that the wine gift is intended for.

If you have really gone the extra mile and driven off the beaten track to find that special gift, make sure you tell your story. A true wine lover will always enjoy such tales and who knows that, one day, they might want to go and find that special place themselves.

Wine Tours: Rhode Island Is Small In Size And Big On Wine

by Jim Hofman

If you’ve never been to Rhode Island, let us be the first to encourage you to visit. Simply put, Rhode Island is unforgettable. Often nicknamed “America’s First Resort” tiny Rhode Island is much more. Its climate is tempered by the Atlantic Ocean, and there are miles upon miles of breathtaking beaches (and views) to savor and enjoy.

Further inland, Rhode Island offers the cosmopolitan and historic city of Providence and a surprising array of agricultural activity, punctuated by a small but thriving wine industry. If this surprises you, you’re not alone … we were surprised as well! But grapes grow in plentiful numbers here, and winemakers have adapted their art in accordance with what nature provides.

There are five wineries in Rhode Island, making this is a perfect weekend wine travel destination. Interestingly, Rhode Island’s climate is very similar to the north of France, which is famous for its wine production. Since Providence is our starting point, let’s learn a bit more about this charming and vibrant city adjacent to Narragansett Bay.

Providence: A City Of Great Neighborhoods

We were delighted to discover that Providence, the capitol of Rhode Island with a population of 175,000, is a very walkable city. What better way to explore a city than to feel its pulse on foot? Among Providence’s neighborhood destinations are Wayland Square, Federal Hill, and of course the downtown area.

Federal Hill, long known for its “Little Italy” area, teems with dining opportunities. If you’re a fan of independent stores and shops, don’t miss Wayland Square on the city’s east side. And let’s not forget downtown Providence, a destination for dining, nightlife, and historic architecture.

Exploring Rhode Island Wine

Since Rhode Island is such a small state, one could quite possibly visit all five wineries in two days. However, you’d miss the simple pleasure of discovering all that Rhode Island has to offer. We were struck how lush, green, and rural the area became as we traveled outside of Providence.

Just a few minutes from the Massachusetts border is the small town of Cumberland, home of Diamond Hill Vineyards. Located on a 34 acre site, it’s so picturesque here that weddings and special events are common in front of the 220 year old vineyard house. Known for its Pinot Noir grapes, Diamond Hill also has an excellent reputation for fruit wines.

South of Providence in Newport County, you’ll find three wineries: Greenvale Vineyards, Newport Vineyards and Winery, and Sakonnet Vineyards. Each location is a scenic gem! In addition to the gorgeous scenery, each winery hosts numerous seasonal events, perfect for relaxing and enjoying crisp, delightful Rhode Island vintages.

Leaving the Newport area and heading toward Rhode Island’s southwestern coastal area, you’ll find Langworthy Farm Winery in Westerly, just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean. Langworthy is situated on a family farm with an 1875 Victorian farmhouse that welcomes overnight guests. The grounds feature a stunning Norway maple tree that is reportedly the largest of its kind in the state.

You’ll find wine for any palate at these charming Rhode Island wineries, from deep complex reds to light and crisp Rieslings. So, here’s to little Rhode Island … small in size but very very big in wine, taste, and scenery! Once you visit, you’ll never forget. Cheers!

Wine Racks: Displaying your Favorite Wines in Style

by Jim Mandl

Important for everyone who enjoys a great bottle of wine, wine racks provide both a functional and beautiful solution. Wine racks can be a statement, clean and make your wines look even better than they taste (well sometimes). With the huge variety racks to choose from, many different kinds of materials are used to create these racks which allows for an variety of styles to fit your personality.

To demonstrate to your colleagues, friends or special someone that you do have a great collection, look to have a couple of small strategically placed wine racks in high visibility areas that will allow for conversation and attention. Look for a simple design than will show off your collection a few bottles at a time and be willing to pull from the rack and open a bottle after discussing how great the vintage will taste.

Without getting confused, be sure to keep track of your vintages. When storing lots of wine, you really need a set of wood wine racks that can help you to identify the label on each bottle. The design of the racks is extremely important as it can significantly impact the ease of readability. If your bottles are stored the wrong way you might never be able to tell which bottle is which!

If you are fortunate to have a cellar, there are also commercial and personal use custom wine rack services that will create a proper arrangement for your needs. Or perhaps you are looking for a nice design to complement the look and feel of your wine shop! No matter what your requirement or need is, today there are plenty of beautiful designs to choose from. Many racks can even be custom made to suit your unique needs. For example if the theme of your cellar is black and white then a black colored set of wrought iron wine racks can look stunning in your cellar!

The more extensive you collection becomes, especially when ‘collector’ status is achieved, more important that the asthetics of the rack are the proper conditions of the storage room or cellar. You should not risk exposing your collection to less proper conditions and as suck a suitable wine rack becomes a function more than a design item. Wine needs a proper level of humidity and temperature level in order to store properly.

Of course, proper storage is the first objective and almost goes without saying. There are certain things you need to keep in mind while selecting the wine rack of your choice. You need to ensure that the design is such that it facilitates the cork to be in contact with the wine. This will prevent the cork portion from drying. In addition you also need to ensure that the sediments collected at the bottom of the wine bottles are not disturbed. Ideally the wine bottles should not suffer from any sort of instability or excess movement as that can hamper with the ageing process. You also need to ensure that each wine bottle is stored on an individual basis in a separate shelving. This way even if you have to take one bottle out it will not affect or move the other bottles in the rack.
